BDO UK: application stages, tests and practice
BDO says its process runs from an online application to an online task-based assessment, a video interview, a virtual assessment centre with a case study presentation and a group exercise, and, for graduate and school leaver roles, a face-to-face interview in the office you applied to. BDO's practice link for the task-based assessment is an Arctic Shores demo task.

Online application
Official employerA short online form covering your education and experience. You can save and return to it. BDO's FAQ says you can apply to one stream per recruitment season and choose up to two teams within it.
Online task-based assessment
Official employerInteractive, puzzle-style tasks that BDO says measure cognitive ability, resilience and decision-making, and behaviours and cognitive traits such as problem-solving. BDO says no prior preparation is needed. Its AI guidance says the tasks are based on quantitative and inductive reasoning. BDO's hints page links to a practice question at an Arctic Shores demo task. It runs in a web browser, progress saves automatically if you are interrupted, and you receive personalised feedback. Durations and item numbers are not published on the pages read.
Publisher: Arctic Shores (named by the employer or an employer-run portal)
Practise: Arctic Shores-style task practice, Game-based assessment practice
Video interview
Official employerRecorded responses to scenario-based questions such as "What would you do if...?". BDO assesses communication, awareness of the business stream you applied to (Audit, Tax, Advisory and so on), decision-making and fit with its values, and suggests STAR to structure answers. The platform gives a practice stage first (camera and microphone checks, a sample question, playback) that is not assessed. BDO's FAQ says the video interview is timed. The number of questions and time limits are not published on the pages read, and no vendor is named.
Practise: Video interview practice
Virtual assessment centre
Official employerActivities that simulate real work at BDO, delivered online. For graduates and school leavers it has two parts: a case study presentation, where you analyse information and present recommendations to assessors, and a group exercise, where your team analyses a business problem and presents recommendations. Interns and industrial placement students also have an interview as part of the virtual assessment centre. BDO says the group exercise looks for collaboration over competition.
Practise: Assessment centre practice, Case study exercise practice, Presentation exercise practice, Group exercise practice
Face-to-face interview (graduate and school leaver only)
Official employerA conversation with senior staff in the office you applied to. BDO says it explores your motivation, decision making and learning agility, and asks you to link answers to its values: Being Responsible, Being Bold, Being Collaborative and Being Genuine.
Practise: Daily interview question
Final stage line-up
Virtual. Graduates and school leavers complete a case study presentation to assessors and a group exercise analysing a business problem, followed by a separate face-to-face interview in the office applied to. Interns and industrial placement students complete the same two tasks plus an interview within the virtual assessment centre. Exercise durations are not published.
Retakes and validity
BDO accepts one application per season. If you are unsuccessful at any stage, you wait until the next season to reapply. You can apply to one stream per season. Adjustments must be requested when you apply, as they cannot be applied once you have begun. No test re-sit or result validity rule is stated on the pages read.
What we could not verify
- Number of tasks and duration of the task-based assessment are not published on the pages read
- The video interview platform, number of questions and time per question are not published on the pages read. A BDO Australia page gives 3 to 5 questions, but that is a different firm's process
- A prep site says the BDO assessment includes numerical and verbal tests and a behavioural assessment; that wording was not found on BDO's own pages
- Durations of the case study, group exercise and interviews are not published on the pages read
- The process for work experience, insight days and the Black Heritage insight programme is not described on the pages read
